What tastes more like home for a German far away from home this Christmas season than a hearty meal of Rouladen with Red Cabbage and Spaetzle!
Well, if you are on the San Francisco Peninsula, you might want to head over to Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City which is transformed into a German Christmas wonderland this December. Gourmet Haus Staudt is a Bay Area institution. Owned in the second generation by the Staudt family, they operate a German specialty store, restaurant and beer garden on Broadway in downtown Redwood City.
The restaurant and beer garden serve all the obvious goodies you expect at a German restaurant abroad – including rouladen with red cabbage, an assortment of sausages with trimmings, leberkäse and pretzels. And the food is good. Near as good as at mom’s back home. And that’s saying something! Plus they have 10 German beers and 3 “guest taps”. The restaurant and beer garden are rustic German and very popular. And it can get crowded. Did I mention loud? Ever been in a Bavarian Bierstube? Go to have fun, drink good beer and eat home style.
The attached store features over 100 German beers and a huge assortment of German goods which you cannot find anywhere else. And right now, it looks like a Christmas wonderland. It’s hard to leave the store without spending more than you intended. There are just so many items that you think you need now or just any time in the future. So you buy it. At least, I do.
Oh, the German chocolates and Marzipan, the pastries and cookies and Stollen, the Lebkuchen and Glühwein and Christmas beers! The holiday decorations, ornaments and collectibles. My heart flutters and rejoices. Homesickness descends on me and unearths me until I have finally stilled my hunger for this German-feeling-ness (I know that’s not a word) and (over)filled my shopping basket. There! I am grounded again.
Until the next time.
